Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University has designated lot 56 – located off Pine Street behind the Superior Dome – as an overnight winter parking alternative for NMU students who live off campus, but lack adequate off-street space for their vehicles.

 Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  Students must have a commuter parking permit in order to take advantage of overnight and/or long-term parking.

The decision was motivated by the City of MarquetteÂ’s renewed emphasis on enforcing front-yard parking ordinances, combined with the seasonal ban that prohibits overnight parking on city streets during the winter months.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  “The city is taking a more aggressive approach about enforcing city codes,” said Carl Pace of the facilities department at NMU.  “The city approached us, and we were trying to offer some alternatives for our students.”

 Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  Lot 56 is available for NMU students renting apartments or houses within the city of Marquette.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  “I donÂ’t know how many individuals will take advantage of this,” Pace said.  “Time will tell how much it is going to be used.”

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  The lot, which will be plowed as time and conditions permit, can be used as long as the winter parking ban is in effect, Pace said.
