An Evening with Gilbert and Sullivan” on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Northern Michigan University. A cash bar will open at 5:45 p.m. in the University Center Great Lakes Rooms and dinner will be served at 6:15. The concert, featuring an ensemble of NMU and Marquette singers performing comedic songs from the Gilbert and Sullivan repertory, will begin at 7:30.Â
Tickets that include both dinner and the concert must be purchased in advance by Nov. 10. They are available at all NMU EZ ticket outlets for $25. Concert-only tickets are also available for $15.
The SLOA was formed by NMU music professor Robert Engelhart based on the enthusiastic response to performances of The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore. The organization will help produce a light opera each year, complete with a full orchestra. It plans to present more Gilbert and Sullivan operas over the next three to five years, beginning with The Mikado in April.   Â
SLOA members will also provide scholarships for vocal studies at NMU and support for educational travel. Many members will volunteer with costuming, lighting, publicity and set construction. A future goal of the group is to develop or sponsor opera education activities for local public schools.
