SUPERIOR LIGHT OPERA ASSOCIATION TO MEET

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  MARQUETTE – An organizational meeting for the newly formed Superior Light Opera Association is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 2. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. in room 111 of the Thomas Fine Arts building at Northern Michigan University.

The association will facilitate and promote the NMU music departmentÂ’s annual light opera productions held at the Forest Roberts Theatre.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  “WeÂ’re planning to present a series of Gilbert & Sullivan operas, beginning with The Mikado in May 2005,” said Robert Engelhart, director of opera at NMU. “Most people are familiar with Gilbert & Sullivan shows so they will appeal to a mass audience. They are also extremely funny.”

Engelhart said association members can assist with every aspect of opera production: costumes, lighting, carpentry work for set building, props, and serving as stage managers and ushers. They will also have access to reduced ticket prices.

“We’ve always had a smattering of community members take part in the productions, but this is a way of reaching out to more who may be excited about the prospect of being involved and keeping this going. I encourage everyone to attend and share ideas.”

The groupÂ’s first major project will be a gala fund-raising dinner/concert Nov. 13. For more information on the Superior Light Opera Association, call Englehart at 906-227-1038 or e-mail at rengelha@nmu.edu.
