MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University music department will hold an informational meeting on the Superior Light Opera Association, a new community group being formed to support the production of light operas in Marquette.

It is scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 3, in room 114 of McClintock Hall at NMU. All interested persons are invited to attend and ask questions or offer suggestions.

Fueled by the success of recent productions H.M.S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance, NMU professor Robert Engelhart plans a series of Gilbert and Sullivan operas over the next three to five years, beginning with The Mikado in April 2005. The Superior Light Opera Association will work in conjunction with the NMU music department to produce and promote the operas.

“There are opportunities here for everyone,” Engelhart said. “What the audience sees and hears on stage depends on the hard work of dozens of people behind the scenes in such areas as construction, lighting, costuming, promotion, publicity and fundraising.”
