Iraqi Boxer will Train with U.S. Boxing Team

MARQUETTE, Mich.— The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the National Olympic Committee of Iraq (NOCI) have jointly announced that Iraqi boxer Najah Ali Salah (Pronounced: Nye-JAH ALL-ee SAL-lah) will join Team USA at its technical training camp on June 5-16, which will be held at the United States Olympic Education Center (USOEC) on the campus of Northern Michigan University. 

 Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  Ali will be tutored at the camp by his coach Maurice “Termite” Watkins, a former world-class boxer who currently resides in Houston and is the head coach of the Iraqi National Team, as well as Team USA head coach Basheer Abdullah and U.S. technical director Al Mitchell, the USOEC coach and 1996 American Olympic coach. 

 Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  Following the camp, Team USA and Ali will travel to compete at the Titan Games in Atlanta on June 17-19.

 Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  Ali, a 106-pound flyweight (48 kilograms) is the lone Iraqi boxer but one of about 25 athletes from his country who will participate in the Athens Games on Aug. 13-29.  The 24-year-old is a Baghdad native who graduated from Alrifdin University in 2003 with a bachelorÂ’s degree in computer science.  He is the son of a well-established boxer and trainer; his father getting Ali involved in the sport at a young age.  In 2002, Ali was the 48K champion at the Arab Games.  Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ 

The finalized technical training camp schedule and opportunities for the public to meet with the Olympians will be announced closer to the start of the camp.
