MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University’s psychology department will host a colloquium titled, “Reading IS Rocket Science.”  It will be presented by T.V. Joe Layng, senior scientist for Headsprout Inc. in Seattle, Wash.

The colloquium is scheduled from 3:10- 4:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, in Gries Hall room 167. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

The theory is that reading instruction has not been effective for many children over the course of history for a variety of reasons. Some people blame factors not directly related to instruction, such as bad genes or a bad home life. Layng will zero in on the fact that all children learn differently. He will describe a reading program, delivered entirely over the Internet, that has proven effective for a wide range of children.
