MARQUETTE – Three national slam champions – Buddy Wakefield, Regie Gibson and Sage Francis – are coming to Northern Michigan University on Tuesday, Nov. 11. They will perform their poetry at 8 p.m. in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center.
A poetry slam is, by definition, the competitive form of poetry that emphasizes not only the words, but how they are presented. Wakefield is a resident of Seattle, Wash., who has achieved such titles as favorite poet of the Midwest in 2002, and poetry Grand Slam Champion of Seattle in 2003. He is also the co-founder of the Bullhorn Collective.
Gibson was the 1998 Chicago Tribune artist of the year in addition to the 1998 national poetry slam individual champion. He is featured regularly on National Public Radio.
Francis is the winner of several freestyle awards and had toured three different continents, including the continental United States four times. He is also featured on ESPN and ABC X- game commercials.
