NMU ROTC to hold Memorial Bataan Death March

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  The Northern Michigan University Army ROTC will hold a Memorial Bataan Death March on Saturday, April 19. It will cover 26.2 miles, starting on CR 510 at 6:30 a.m. and ending at the Veterans Memorial in Harlow Park that afternoon.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  ROTC is holding the event because the annual march on the White Sands Missile Range property in New Mexico was canceled when the medical unit from the New Mexico National Guard that normally supports the event was activated for deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  Schools, teams and individuals participating in the event Saturday will include NMU, Michigan Technological University, Central Michigan University and the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse. Thirty-eight students will participate in the march.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  The course is CR 510 to US 41 to Wright Street to Tracy Street to Seventh Street to Harlow Park.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  Tentatively, marchers will pass through the NMU campus between 2-4 p.m. on Tracy and Seventh Streets. Between 2:30-4:30 p.m., marchers will cross the finish line in Harlow Park.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  There will be an awards dinner for the participants at 6 p.m. at the American Legion on Bluff Street. Don Rutter, a U.P. native and survivor of Japanese prison camp internment during WWII, will speak at the awards dinner.

Â Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚ Ã‚  The event is sponsored by the military science department at NMU and the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.
