MARQUETTE – The third annual Valentine Soiree will be held from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Northern Michigan University Art Museum.

The lobby in Lee Hall will be transformed and champagne and hors dÂ’oeuvres will be served at tables set among the gallery paintings. Live jazz will be provided by new NMU music professor and trumpeter Mark Flaherty, his quartet of local musicians and singer Janice Keegan.

The two artists featured at the museum through March 9 are Alison Lasley of New York, who will attend the soiree, and Angela Oliveira, a Brazilian painter. Lasley said she loves to experiment with all types of media in her paintings, which are either large canvases or smaller works on board that are grouped together to form large compositions.

OliveiraÂ’s paintings on wood defy easy categorization. She presents visual information made from earth tone pigments, cement, hair, mica dust or metal, then alters the images by fire.

The Friends of the University Art Museum are hosting the Valentine Soiree. All proceeds support programming at the NMU Art Museum. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased by calling the development fund office at 227-2627.
