MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan University and its faculty union have reached a tentative agreement on a three-year contract.

The membership of the NMU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors is in the process of reviewing the proposal. A ratification vote is scheduled April 4.

If the agreement is ratified by the membership and approved by the university's Board of Control, it will take effect July 1. This would mark one of the few times in recent years that negotiations have successfully concluded before the previous contract expires - in this case, the end of June. The bargaining process began earlier than usual in an attempt to settle the contract prior to President William E. Vandament's retirement in August.

Negotiators indicated that much of the previous contract language will be carried over into the new agreement. There also is new language concerning salaries, health care benefits, summer school and the delivery of distance education programs.

Further details of the settlement are being withheld pending final approval.
