NMU STUDENTS WIN SILVER IN NATIONAL COSMETOLOGY CO

MARQUETTE--Two Northern Michigan University students were silver medalists at the national VICA Skills Olympic Conference, held June 28 in Kansas City, Mo.

Sara Jensen of Gladstone and Sally Derouin of Escanaba competed in the cosmetology area under the direction of their adviser and coach, Susan Myra Grimes.

"This is the first time, in my 10 years of teaching and six years of attending this conference, that NMU cosmetology students have won medals at this event," said Grimes. 'They put a great deal of time and effort into preparing for this competition. It was thrilling to be a part of the awards ceremony, especially when all of the representatives from Michigan stood up and cheered for us as we made our way to the platform.'

In addition to their medals, Jensen and Derouin each received $500 product certificates from hair-care companies.

Grimes said highlights of the awards session included a laser light show and guest speakers Janet Evans, a four-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming, and Brig. Gen. John Bradley, a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War.

VICA, or Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, strives to help young people develop social and leadership abilities, as well as hands-on skills, that will allow them to play responsible roles in their communities and in the job market.
