MARQUETTE-A memorial celebration of the life of Forest A. Roberts is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, in the Forest Roberts Theatre on the Northern Michigan University campus. The public is invited.

Roberts passed away in March at the age of 96. He was founder of the Department of Speech - now Communication and Performance Studies - at NMU. He also directed many stage productions, toured the U.P. and acted in a number of roles. The university's theatre facility was named in his honor in 1969. Roberts was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from NMU in 1987.

The ceremony will be hosted by longtime NMU Professor James Rapport. It will feature music by Dawn Betts and a video tribute compiled by Madison filmmaker Phyllis BergPigorsch. Speakers will include: Roberts' daughter, Sara Osborn, and his son, Allyn Roberts. Others participating in the memorial will be grandson Clark Roberts, lifelong friend Blaine Betts and the current director of the Forest Roberts Theatre, James A. Panowski. The Rev. John Burt will provide a scripture reading and deliver the prayer.

The First Nighters Club Advisory Board will host a reception in the lobby immediately following the observance, at which time a commissioned portrait and building plaque will be unveiled and dedicated.

A table set up in the theatre lobby will display memorabilia that friends are invited to bring to the memorial. Those interested in sharing remembrances as part of the program are invited to call 228-8065 or 226-8060.

Donations to the Forest A. Roberts scholarship may be directed to the NMU Development Fund. For more information, call the Forest Roberts Theatre from 1:30-4 p.m. weekdays.
