Governor John Engler signed the Higher Education Appropriation Bill on Monday, April 1, in East Lansing. The bill provides Michigan's 15 public universities with a continuation state appropriations budget for Fiscal Year 2002-03. Michigan's university presidents pledged not to raise tuition and fees more than 8.5 percent or $425, whichever is greater, if the universities were to receive a continuation of state appropriations at the same level as last year. NMU received $52 million in state appropriations for Fiscal Year 2001-02. With the signing of this bill, Northern will continue to proceed with its timeline of bringing a recommendation for Fall 2002 tuition and fees to the NMU Board of Trustees for its May 3 meeting.
