MARQUETTE - John S. Brinzo, chairman and chief executive officer of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., will be the keynote speaker at Northern Michigan University's spring commencement May 4. Brinzo will also receive an honorary Doctor of Business degree; from NMU.
Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. is the leading supplier of iron ore products to the North American steel industry. It manages the Tilden and Empire Mines in Marquette County.
Brinzo began his career with CCI in 1969 as a financial analyst. He held a number of management positions, including controller and executive vice president of finance and planning, both at Cliffs' corporate headquarters and at the company's mining operations in Michigan. Brinzo was named to his current position Jan. 1, 2000.
He sits on the board of directors for the American Iron and Steel Institute and for the National Mining Association. In his community, he is a member of the Great Lakes Science Center Board of Trustees.
Brinzo is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Kent State University and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University. He and his wife, Marlene, have two adult sons and live in North Royalton, Ohio.
