MARQUETTE - Marquette area business Jilbert Dairy has endowed a scholarship as part of This Decisive Season: The Campaign for Northern Michigan University.
The Jilbert Dairy Scholarship will be awarded annually to a self-identified student from an Upper Peninsula family in the agriculture business or a profession relating to agriculture. The recipient will be chosen by the University Scholarship Committee from the qualified applicants.
Each recipient will receive $2,000 awarded $500 per year for four years.
According to John Jilbert, the scholarship is a way to pay tribute to the U.P. families of agriculture and to publicly recognize Northern as a valuable resource to the Upper Peninsula.
"This scholarship is a thank you to all the U.P. families who have been a part of the Jilbert Dairy business in one way or another," said Jilbert. "Our success is dependent on the people who make up our organization, and it is my hope that this scholarship will be a resource for those families and other families of this region who make their livelihood through agricultural means."
Jilbert Dairy began business in 193 7 when it processed I 0,000 pounds of milk per month. Today, Jilbert processes raw milk from more than 70 U.P. farms at a rate of over 4 million pounds per month.
