MARQUETTE - The health promotion office at Northern Michigan University has announced the winners of its first SaferBreak Week Visual Arts Competition.

Students had an opportunity to create artwork that addresses some of the higher risk choices students make during spring break. These include drinking too much alcohol, drinking and driving, riding with a drinking driver, dating violence and date rape, and sexually transmitted infections including HIV.

A faculty panel judged the work of seven student artists. More than 180 NMU students and employees attending the 2002 Wildcat Wellness Fair also cast ballots for their favorite pieces in the People's Choice category.

In the faculty judging, first place went to Alex Viguerie of Marquette for an acrylic painting titled "Consequences." Edward O'Gara of Chicago placed second with a graphic design titled "Think." In the People's Choice category, Brad Busenius of Rochester, Minn. received the most votes for his graphic design piece titled "The Alcoholic." Viguerie came in second.

First prize in each category is a $50 gift certificate at a local retailer. Second prize in each category is a $25 gift certificate. In a random drawing from among those who voted at the Wellness Fair, NMU staff member Janet Koski received a $25 gift certificate.

The artwork will be posted online after spring break at www.nmu.edu/hpo.
