MARQUETTE - The NMU Bookstore contributed $2,024 from the sale of patriotic-themed merchandise to the Kip Taylor ROTC Scholarship. The fund was established in memory of the Marquette native and 1985 NMU graduate who was killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
Apparel companies Jansport and Gear for Sports sponsored a promotion that funneled proceeds from select t-shirts, sweatshirts and caps to Sept. 11 relief efforts. Jaakola purchased a supply of the patriotic items and suggested that the Bookstore's profit margin be applied to a related cause - a scholarship named for one of the victims with local ties.
"We were very pleased to be able to honor Kip in this way," said Betsy Jaakola of the NMU Bookstore. "I knew of him and watched him play basketball here at Northern. It's not only a way to recognize him, but the money will benefit future Northern students, so it's a win-win situation."
Kay Taylor called it a "wonderful promotion and tribute." Her son participated in the ROTC program at NMU and was commissioned by his father, Donald Taylor, a former professor of military science. She said the goal is to name the first scholarship recipient in May. The annual award will be presented to an ROTC student entering his or her senior year.
