NMU cosmetology students have returned from the Chicago Midwest Beauty Competition with the Grand Prix trophy for averaging the highest overall score as a team. More than 275 competitors from the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico were involved. A number of participants use the Chicago competition as a warm-up for July's World Hair Olympics in Las Vegas. This marked the first time NMU has sent a team to this high-level competition. Professor Judi Rousseau says she wasn't surprised the students did well, but was surprised that they won the top prize. Three students were awarded medallions in individual competitions, which included the following divisions: ethnic long-hair evening style; long-hair bridal style; ladies cut, color and design; and gents cut, color and design. All styles were done on mannequin heads. There will be a photo/interview opportunity at the Jacobetti Center at 1 p.m. Friday, March 15. Instructors and students will be available for interviews. Potential visuals include students working in the salon or in class situations, the Grand Prix trophy, award-winning mannequins from the competition, etc. If you have any questions, please call me at 227-1015.
