MARQUETTE - Paul McKelvey is the new director of continuing education and sponsored programs at Northern Michigan University. He previously served as executive director of Greater Michigan Programs in the college of extended learning at Central Michigan University.

His responsibilities at NMU include developing continuing education programs and academic outreach services; supervising and administering sponsored program activities; investigating and implementing technological improvements in continuing education; preparing a marketing plan relating to summer, off-campus programs and non-degree instructional programs; and coordinating the academic advisement for off-campus centers in Escanaba and Kingsford.

"Given the realities of today's demographics, economy and cultural changes, no modem university should be without a strong, active continuing education unit," said McKelvey, shortly after assuming his duties Jan. 15.

At CW, he directed off-campus operations in Michigan outside the metro Detroit area for a self-supporting, extended-learning college. Greater Michigan Programs delivers CMU degree programs via regional centers in Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Midland, Saginaw and Traverse City.

McKelvey also spent 13 years at Eastern Michigan University as dean of continuing education. He held a related position at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis and is a former dean of program development, sponsored programs and community services at Indiana Vocational Technical College.

He has also taught many university-level environmental and science courses.

McKelvey holds an educational doctorate in higher education administration from Indiana University at Bloomington, as well as master's and bachelor's degrees from Ball State University.
