Spanish Day Event

An estimated 400 students from 14 high schools in the Upper Peninsula will gather at Northern Michigan University Thursday for the 11th Annual Spanish Day.

Students in at least their second year of high school Spanish will have an opportunity to enter competitions in show-and-tell, skit and song categories.  They can also test their foreign language knowledge in a Spanish Quiz Bowl event.  Students will be able to visit a Spanish-speaking country called "Espaiiolandia" and pass through customs, exchange money, bargain for candy and conduct business at the market, post office and other destinations.  The activities run from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Explorer and Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center.  An awards ceremony follows from 12:10-12:30 p.m.

NMU students will help with the activities and serve as judges of the competition.  Spanish Day is sponsored by the NMU department of modem languages and literatures.  For more information, contact Tim Compton at 227-1107.
