MA231 TOPICS IN GEOMETRY (4 Cr.)
Satisfies the foundations of natural science- mathematics requirement [Division III]
Prerequisite: MA104 or MA111 or MA151
Offered: Every winter beginning W2014
The course is designed to introduce the student to a broad range of ideas in geometry. Topics include the following: visualization and communication skills; understanding shapes and their properties; measurement especially as it relates to selection of units, accuracy, and precision; concepts related to length, area, and volume; and transformational geometry. The content will be taught through an informal (as opposed to axiomatic) study of the concepts. This approach focuses on understanding the mathematics underlying rules, algorithms, and relationships of geometry rather than formal proofs.
