Modern Languages & Literatures Certification Program

Parlez-vous français? Sprechen Sie Deutsch? ¿Habla usted español?

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Northern Michigan University offers a Language Certification Program in which degree-seeking students can validate their language proficiency skills at less than the major or minor level, but beyond sophomore level proficiency. Students can receive language certification in French, German, or Spanish.

To receive certification, students must complete the fourth semester class (202 level) in either French, German, or Spanish and an additional culture and civilization course corresponding to the language. Students must pass the courses with a grade of “C” or better to qualify. If students have prior language ability, they need not take all of the prerequisite classes. The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures offers placement testing to help students determine their ability level and to provide credit for prior language training. After students complete the required courses and apply for the certification, a notation is made on the transcript, and a certificate of language certification is provided.
