What is NSSE?

NSSE (pronounced “nessie”) stands for the National Survey of Student Engagement.  The goal of NSSE is to seek the opinions of first-year and senior students regarding how they spend their time, and what they have gained from their university.  It asks, what benefits are students achieving from the programs and activities that the university provides?

Who completes NSSE?

First-year and Senior students are qualified to complete NSSE. These students will begin receiving emails for participation starting Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

In addition, Northern is one of many institutions that participate in this national survey. Here are a few quick facts provided by NSSE:

  • 469 colleges and universities participated in NSSE 2022
  • 252,336 students responded to NSSE in 2022
  • Approximately 6.5 million students have completed the survey since 2000

When will NSSE be available?

Qualified students will receive an email invitation to complete the survey. Emails from NSSE will have the following subject line:
Please help NMU by completing NSSE

The email schedule for qualifying freshman and seniors is as follows:

  • Message 1:  Wednesday, March 15
  • Message 2:  Tuesday, March 21
  • Message 3:  Monday, March 27
  • Message 4:  Thursday, March 30
  • Message 5:  Tuesday, April 4

Additional messages may follow depending upon participation rates.

How long does it take to complete NSSE?

The survey takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.

Is NSSE confidential?

Information collected in NSSE is confidential, but not anonymous.

What happens after NSSE is submitted?

Upon survey close, results will be aggregated and compared with other universities and peer institutions across several competencies.

Most importantly, the aggregated survey responses have the ability to affect decisions and improvements to NMU's policies and programs.

Why should I complete NSSE OR encourage my students to complete NSSE?

This is THE best chance for current students to voice their opinions of campus.
