Study Abroad Steps

NOTE: All study abroad appointments must be made by phone 906-227-2510.

1. Attend study abroad information session

2. Begin to discuss your desire to study abroad with the significant people in your life (mom and dad, partners, etc.)

3. Review the various study abroad programs available If undecided, make an appointment by phone (227-2510) with the Office of International Programs (OIP) to discuss program selection.

4. Once you have selected a program make an appointment by phone (227-2510) with the OIP to begin the application process

5. Submit the following to the OIP:

  • completed application,
  • application fee if required,
  • statement of purpose,
  • official NMU transcript,
  • references
  • other application materials required by your program

6. If you do not have a passport apply for one now at http://travel.state.gov/passport/index.html

7. Begin to compile information and documentation for your study abroad budget.

8. Check out Foundation Office for possible scholarships.

9. Begin to evaluate what classes you will want to take during your study abroad and gather course descriptions / course syllabi information for evaluation. Classes must be signed off on by Academic Department Heads prior to departure. Get more classes approved than what you plan on taking.
