  1. Attend student teaching meeting through the Education department

 

  1. Schedule an appointment with Susan Morgan in the Office of International Programs - 227-2510

 

  1. Apply to program:

o        Visit http://www.jcl.co.nz/index.htm complete booking form

o        Before submitting form – print out a copy for Susan Morgan

o        Write on your booking form

o        number of weeks you would like to student teach and date you would like to start

o        2 letters of reference

o        Transcript – does not need to be official

o        Resume

o        Picture – will be scanned and sent to JCL

o        Bring all information to the Office of International Programs

o        Apply for your VISA – if needed http://www.nzembassy.com

 

  1. Complete your student teaching budget:

o        Get estimates on the following information

o        Airfare

o        Round trip Travel to point of departure (# of miles)

o        Additional Medical Insurance

§         Verify that you current insurance covers you overseas

o        Host country Visa – if needed

o        Personal Spending Allowance

o        Make appointment with Susan Morgan(227-2510)

 

  1. Schedule an appointment with Financial Aid (227-2327).

 

  1. Invoice
    1. You will receive an invoice from JCL by e-mail. This invoice will be charged to your NMU student account.

                                                              i.      Pay your 20% deposit directly to JCL

                                                            ii.      Inform Office of International Programs when you paid your deposit and the amount you paid. We will verify with JCL the deposit was received and your student account will be adjusted.

    1. Your NMU account will reflect your student teaching charges plus a $100 study abroad fee
    2. Pay your NMU account in full

                                                              i.      See Carolyn Basal – Student Service Center

                                                            ii.      Inform her that you are doing your student teaching in New Zealand

    1. A check will be mailed to JCL (but not until your NMU account is paid in full)

Your bill will look like this:
NMU Tuition $3,354.26
University Fee  $ 244.00
Student Act. Fee $ 30.26
Int’l Education Fee  $ 871.48 (difference of NMU tuition and fees and your JCL bill)
SA Registration Fee $ 100.00
TOTAL  $4,600.00

Costs (2008)

8 week cost is $4500
16 week cost is $7915

 

(Requires 20% deposit upon acceptance) This includes host family placements, transportation to school, a visiting lecture, and supervision. Placements are available from February through December, in four distinct semester sections. There is a six-week break from December – January. Fall (fourth term) placements do NOT work for secondary ed. Students.

Term One – 5 February – 9 April 2008 (Break 10 April – 4 May)

Term Two – 5 May – 4 July 2008 (Break 5 July – 20 July)

Term Three – 21 July – 26 September 2008 (Break 27 September – 12 October)

Term four – 13 October – 19 December 2008 (Break for 4 to 6 weeks) – no Secondary placements

 

Terms 2009

Term One – 5 February – 18 April 2009 (Break 18 April – 26 April

Term Two – 27 April – 3 July 2009 (Break 4 July – 19 July)

Term Three – 20 July – 25 September 2009 (Break 26 September – 11 October)

Term four – 12 October – 18 December 2009 (Break for 4 to 6 weeks) – no Secondary placements

 

New Zealand terms do not closely match those at Northern. Your NMU financial aid will not disburse early; you will need to plan on pre-paying your 20% deposit to JCL Co. Ltd., as well as your airline and some personal spending money.

 

Study Abroad Orientation

You will receive an e-mail from the Office of International Programs to attend our pre-departure orientation. There are forms that you will receive that need to be turned in before you leave.

JCL will e-mail you your placement information. Please be sure to give this information to the Education department and the Office of International Programs
