Community Health Education  Undergraduate Bulletin

Lifestyle diseases are epidemic in the United States. For this reason, now more than ever we need professionals with skills in facilitating lifestyle change. Community Health educators excel in this area by designing theory driven health promotion programs to facilitate behavior change at the individual and community level. The Community Health Education curriculum focuses on health literacy and the CHES responsibilities.

Community Health Educators work in varied settings such as:

• Health care settings (hospitals or health departments) assessing for health education needs,  planning, implementing, and evaluating programs for individuals or the community.
• Non-profit agencies such as the American Heart Association
• Businesses providing health promotion programming to promote employee health

Examples of positions that NMU Community Education graduates have been hired into include:

• Health Educator and Outreach Specialist--Alzheimer's Association
• Nutrition Educator--Waukesha County UW-Extension
• Community Services Coordinator--American Red Cross Superior U.P. Chapter
• Youth Prevention Specialist--AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin
• Community Health Educator/Community Coordinator--Sault Tribe of Chippewa

Students may also choose to continue on to graduate school. NMU Community Health Education graduates have pursued graduate degrees in:

• Master's Degree in Community Health
• Master's Degree in Public Health
• Physician Assistant
• Doctor of Physical Therapy
• Master's Degree in Humanitarian Action
• Guidance and Counseling
