Student Organizations

Health Promotion Society membersThe members of Northern Michigan University student organizations sponsor almost 300 campus-wide programs and events every year in addition to hundreds of group activities, four of which have direct ties to the HPER Department. In addition to social activities, student groups at NMU volunteer thousands of hours of service annually to local communities. Joining student organizations provides students with fun, friendships, memories and education experiences that cannot be found in the classroom.

The HPER Department's four student organizations are the Health Promotions Society, the Organization for Outdoor Recreation Professionals, the Student Association for Sports Science, and the Student Athletic Training Organization.  The Organization for Outdoor Recreation Professionals – or OORP – was named the 2007 Student Organization of the Year. That year, it sponsored the Student Outdoor Educator’s Conference and the camp-a-thon in the academic mall that raised more than $2,000 for the homeless. OORP also  participated in campus and community events and volunteered for several community service projects.

To the left are links that provide contact information for theses groups.

In addition, there are several state and national organizations that correspond to HPER majors. Ask your faculty members about these organizations.
