Exercise Science Master's Degree

Northern Michigan University's Master of Science in exercise science is highly regarded and has graduated alumni who have professional careers in broad spectrum of the exercise science, sports science, and health and wellness fields – many at elite levels.

The NMU exercise science master's degree is intended for students with undergraduate backgrounds in athletic training, biological sciences, dietetics, health, nursing, physical education, physiology, physical therapy and sport/exercise science. The primary objective of this program is to provide the student with a working knowledge in the physiological and biomechanical aspects of human movement and exertion.

A core of 17 required credits provides a foundation in the science of exercise. Students also take a minimum of 15 elective credits, which provide specialized study in a variety of applied areas. A master's thesis research option is also available.

To qualify for regular admission into this NMU graduate program, applicants must have a minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.0 or higher in a relevant major or 9 semester hours of relevant course work (human anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, or physics).  Applicants who do not meet the standards for regular admission but have a minimum GPA of 2.50 may be admitted on a conditional basis.  To learn more about the full contingent of program requirements, click on the link to the left.
