2013 Fall Semester Check-Out Information

Residence Hall Closing - Fall Semester

The residence halls, except Spooner Hall, will close at noon on Sunday, December 15.  All students must check out of their room by that time.

Residence Hall Opening - Winter Semester

New Students Participating in Orientation:  Students participating in orientation may check in on Tuesday or Wednesday, January 7 or 8.

Returning students:  Students returning from the 2013 fall semester may return to their room on Thursday, January 9, 2014.

If You Are Moving To Another Room

If you will be moving to another room for the winter semester, you must do so before leaving for the break.  All of your belongings must be moved to your new room before you leave for break.  This may require that you delay your departure so you can move.

If You Are Leaving School

If you have decided not to return to the university next semester, you must schedule a preliminary check-out with your Resident Adviser.  You must also schedule a time with your Resident Adviser to formally check-out of your room prior to leaving (see below).  See your Resident Adviser for more information.

Check-Out With Your RA

You must check out of your room with your Resident Adviser before leaving for the holiday break.  Your RA will post a Check-out Sign-Up Sheet outside of his or her door showing when he or she will be available.  If you miss your scheduled check-out time, your RA will check you out at his or her convenience.

If you fail to properly check out with your RA, you are subject to a $50 Improper Check-Out fee.

Preparing Your Room For the Holiday Break

To prepare for your end-of-the-semester check-out, you must:

  • Empty, properly defrost and unplug your refrigerator (leave the door open otherwise it will smell very bad).  It may take up to 24-hours to defrost the refrigerator and it can be messy so start early.
  • Secure your valuables.
  • Properly dispose of all perishable food in the room and bathroom.
  • Empty wastebaskets and remove all trash from your room.
  • Disconnect all electrical devices except aquarium equipment.
  • Fish need to be removed or provided with a vacation feeder.
  • Close and lock the window and close the blinds.
  • Make sure the bathroom faucets and the shower are off; dripping faucets should be reported to the hall desk.
  • Turn off all lights in both the room and the bathroom.
  • Lock the door to your bathroom and to your room.

Routine Maintenance Inspections

There will be a routine maintenance inspection of all residence hall rooms conducted by the residence hall staff at the beginning of the break period.  The purpose of this review is to inspect for maintenance problems, hazardous or unsanitary conditions, improper room maintenance and improper room readiness.

Maintenance Entries

Maintenance staff may enter student rooms to make repairs when necessary during the break.

Staying in A Double Room Without A Roommate

If you are alone in a two-person room and have not made arrangements for a specific roommate for next semester or do not already have a guaranteed single for next semester, a student new to University housing for the winter semester may be assigned to your room.  You will need to prepare your room and bathroom for that possibility, making sure that your room and bathroom are clean and half of the space in your room (e.g., bed, closet, drawers, desk, towel bar, etc.) is available before you leave for the break.

There is a $250 Improper Room Readiness fee for not making sure your room is prepared for a new roommate and because of this, you will also be charged for a single room or a single Spooner Hall apartment.

Change of Plans

If you decide not to return to NMU next semester after you have left for the break, you must notify the Housing and Residence Life Office by phone (906-227-2620) or in writing - by email (housing@nmu.edu), fax (906-227-1423) or letter (Housing and Residence Life Office, 1401 Presque Isle Ave, Marquette, MI  49855) as soon as possible to request special arrangements to check out of your room.  Arrangements must be made at least 24 hours in advance.  To avoid paying a $150 late contract termination fee plus room charges, you must check out by 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2014.  There is a $50 charge for improper check-out.

Note that the Housing and Residence Life Office will be closed from Monday, December 24, 2012 through Tuesday, January 1, 2013.

If you decide to leave NMU while the Housing and Residence Life Office is closed you must contact the Spooner Hall Desk (906-227-2460) between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., from Tuesday, December 24, 2013 through Wednesday, January 1, 2014 to make arrangements at least 24 hours in advance to schedule a check-out time.

Once you have made your check-out appointment, it is very important that you are present at the designated time and location so the staff can let you into your building and assist you with checking out.
