This winter semester, history students are heavily involved in analyzing historic census data, reviewing and organizing documents related to Upper Peninsula history and editing a book written in 1949, but never published, by an NMU education professor about the history of the university. |

| Sonderegger Symposium IX |

The date has been set for the Ninth Annual Sonderegger Symposium at NMU: Sept. 17, 2009. Proposals for papers are now being accepted; e-mail a 100-word abstract to rmagnaghi@nmu.edu. The line up so far includes a presentation on tourism and the Great Depression, a history of the Gossard plant in Ishpeming and profile of a local engineering battalion. ![]() Individuals interested in accessing the NMU and Regional Oral History Collection can visit NMU Archives, located on the first floor of the Learning Resource Center. History professor Russell Magnaghi and Northern’s Audio-Visual Department created the collection, which contains numerous interviews documenting the history of NMU and the central Upper Peninsula. The Northern audio collection consists of faculty, staff, alumni and student life interviews. It also contains historical interviews concerning the university and the former J.D. Pierce School. The U.P. oral history collection includes tapes of interviews pertaining to the Ishpeming Ski Hall of Fame, iron mining, local celebrations and events. |
