Did You Know?
A serving of meat is three ounces, about the size of a deck of cards.
1. Menu Madness
When it comes to food, the Olympic village has the ultimate buffet. Here’s the tally on the food provided.
Bread: 25,000 loafs
Seafood: 164,000 lbs
Potatoes: 464,000 lbs
Meat: 200,000 lbs
Fruit & vegetables: 660,000 lbs
Eggs, cheese & milk: 170 lbs
That’s plenty of food to satisfy the 5,000-calorie diet of the Olympians. As for the rest of us, we rarely need more than 2,000 a day. The next time you dish up dinner you can limit your intake if you avoid oversize portions and follow this rule: half the plate is veggies and fruit; one quarter is whole grains and one quarter is lean protein.
