An infant is considered colicky if he or she cries for three hours in a row, at least three days a week, for at least three weeks.

1. Colic

She’s crying. And crying. And crying! 

Doctors aren’t sure why colic happens, but colicky babies may have immature digestive systems, so they’re not good at breaking down milk enzymes. Or, it’s possible that colicky babies are just sensitive to certain foods, the traces of which they get from their mother’s breast milk. 

Or perhaps it’s not related to their digestion at all. Researchers suggest it may also be caused by an immature nervous system or hypersensitivity to various sensations.To soothe the constant crying, try using one of the five S’s—swaddling, shushing, swinging, sucking, and stomach/side position.
