Did You Know?

Children exposed to secondhand smoke while riding in the car are twice as likely to develop persistent wheezing (a common symptom of asthma) compared to children who are not exposed.

1. Know Your Child's Triggers

Even though your child is begging you for a dog, you’ll probably have to say no. Fido’s dander is one of many potential asthma triggers. And it’s really important for you—and your child’s grandparents, teachers, and babysitters – to know the list of dangers. Your child may not know how many things can spark an asthma attack:

Cigarette smoke
Dust
Mold
Rodent and cockroach droppings

Pollen
Colds and flus
Intense emotion
Strong odors

Some of these are avoidable— don’t let anyone smoke in front of your child, for example. Other triggers, such as pollen and the inevitable cold, you can’t do much about. Check out the following slides to learn about preparing for the almost inevitable asthma attack.
