Dr. Sundell serves as a tenured, full professor in the Department of Geography. He has taught courses in biogeography, environmental science, environmental policy and regulation, physical geography, environmental impact assessment, environmental restoration, environmental ethics, and conservation biology. Dr. Sundell's research interests are in the areas of bioregional planning, landscape ecology, resource sustainability and native plants restoration. He is the coordinator for the NMU on-campus Native Plants Study Area. Dr. Sundell has authored or co-authored over fifty technical reports, journal articles, and co-edited book. He has presented or chaired sessions at over fifty regional, national and international conferences and workshops. In addition to his academic experience, Dr. Sundell has worked as a project manager at a national energy laboratory, served as a board member and officer of various environmental and conservation non-profit organizations, a U.S. delegate to the Lake Superior Binational Forum and president of the NMU chapter of the America Association of University Professors.
