34HorizonsStevenNeiheiselisthenewvicepresidentorenrollmentandstudentservicesatNMU.HewillsupervisetheollowingocesAdmissionsFinancialAidAcademicandCareerAdvisementCenterDeanoStu-dentsCounselingandConsultationServicesHousingandResidenceLieInternationalProgramsandtheCenterorStudentEnrichment.Neiheiselhasmorethan25yearsomanagementexperiencecoveringsimilarareasoresponsibilityatsever-alpublicandprivateinstitutions.HemostrecentlyservedasassistantvicepresidentorenrollmentmanagementattheUniversityoIdaho.Inadditiontohisexpertiseinenrollmentmanage-mentheisacareeradvocateousinginormationandinormationsystemstopersonalizeservicesincreasee-ciencyandeectivenessbettertargetservicesandcommunicationsandimprovedecision-making.NeiheiselsaidhewasattractedtoNorthernoritssizebreadthostrongacademicprogramstosupporttargetedenrollmentgrowthindivid-ualserviceandunderstandingothecriticalconnectionbetweenrecruit-mentandretention.BeoresettlinginIdahoNeiheiselspentsevenyearsinGreenBay.Hewasassistantdeanoren-rollmentservicesattheUniversityoWisconsin-GreenBayandthenwasbasedintheareaasahighereducationconsultantwithJenz-abarInc.NMUworkingtoappealROTCprogrameliminationNorthernMichiganUniversityplanstoghttheeliminationoits44-year-oldArmyReserveOcerTrainingCorpROTCprogram.NMUwasrecentlynotiedthatitsprogramisoneo13beingeliminatedinMay2015theonlyoneinMichigan.SinceitopenedonthecampusNMUhasgraduatednearly400studentsromitsmilitaryscienceROTCprogram.NMUcurrentlyhas65ROTCcadets10owhomareprojectedtobecommissionedthisyearandanother14nextyear.North-ernsprogramservesbothU.S.ArmyandMichiganNationalGuardcadets.ThesurpriseArmyannouncementwillsubsequentlyimpacttheMichi-ganNationalGuardbytakingawayatrainingandeducationalsource.NorthernMichiganUniversitywillexploreeveryappealsopportunityavailabletoghtthissaysNMUPresidentDavidHayneswhoisavet-eran.OurcurrentcadetsandallothehighschoolstudentsintheUpperPeninsulaandNorthernWisconsinhopingtopreparetoservetheirna-tionintheArmyollowingcomple-tionotheircollegedegreesarebeingpunishedbythisdecisionandwewillnottakethatlightly.TheUpperPen-insulaisanareathatbothhistoricallyandcurrentlyhasanextremelyhighlevelomilitaryserviceandthisisnotthewaytheU.S.Armyshouldrepaythattraditionoservice.Thispastsummer11cadetsotheNMUROTCWildcatBattalionearnedproessionaldevelopmentop-portunitiesandanother11attendedtheLeaderDevelopmentandAssess-mentCourseorArmyschoolssuchasAirborneorAirAssault.ItwasthelargestnumberosummertrainingseatsNMUcadetshadeverearned.ThenoticationletterreceivedbyNMUadministratorssaysThisactionisnotarefectionoeitherthequalityoyourprogramortheout-standingcadetsyouhaveproduced.Wewantaclearexplanationothemethodologyusedinthedeci-sion-makingespeciallywhysomanyruralinstitutionsareonthelistsaidHaynes.Northernhasseengrowthinthenumberoocerscommis-sionedoverthepastveyears.WevealsohadnumerousoccasionswhenourcadetsrankedamongthebestinthenationatU.S.ArmyROTClead-ershipandtrainingcamps.WewantaclearandreasonableexplanationastowhytheywouldeliminateNMUsprogramwhenitissocosteectiveindevelopingocers.Thereare273ArmyROTCpro-gramsintheUnitedStatesincludingseveninMichigan.NewV.P.forEnrollmentandStudentServices
