English Department Placement Criteria and Appeal Process

All incoming students will be “evaluated” for English placement for the following:

  • Composition Placement in EN 111 or EN 090
  • Support Course Recommendations for EN 101 and EN 102.

EN 111 College Composition

    Students who have a 2.0 recalculated HS GPA or higher  OR are Transfer Students
    may enroll in EN 111.

  • These students will be able to sign up for EN 111 on their own when they register.

EN 090 Basic Composition

    Students who have less than a 2.0 OR are missing HS GPA data will not be able to
    enroll in EN 111 and will be REQUIRED to take EN 090.

  • Students will be allowed to appeal this decision. 

EN 101 Learning Skills Development and EN 102 Personal Reading Improvement

  • If students have an ACT English score < 18, they would be recommended to
    take EN 101 Learning Skills Development.
     

  • If students have an ACT Reading score of < 18, they would be recommended to
    take EN 102 Personal Reading Improvement.
     

  • If students are missing an ACT English or ACT Reading score, the equation
    would take ACT composite.
     

  • If the ACT Composite score is < 19, students will be recommended to take
    EN 101 and EN 102
    .
     

  • If the ACT Composite score is missing, students will be recommended to take
    EN 101 and EN 102.

EN 090 Appeal Process

Deadlines

1st Semester Freshman, Fall Before orientation (at least 2 weeks if possible)
2nd Semester Freshman, Winter October 1st
1st Semester Freshman, Winter January 10th

Students wishing to appeal their placement can go to the following link and take an online Writing Test.

  • Students will have three writing prompts from a rotating list of potential writing topics and will have up to two hours to complete the test.
     
  • An e-mail will be sent from the English Department to let students know if their appeal was approved or denied.
