Matt Bell's debut novel In the House upon the Dirt between the Lake and the Woods was longlisted for the Center for Fiction's Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize and was selected by the Library of Michigan as a 2014 Michigan Notable Book. He is also the author of two previous books, How They Were Found and Cataclysm Baby, and his next novel, Scrapper, will be published in 2015. His short fiction has been published in such venues as Best American Mystery Stories, Best American Fantasy, Conjunctions, Gulf Coast, The American Reader, Unstuck, and Hayden's Ferry Review, and he has written non-fiction and book coverage for The Believer, Rain Taxi, American Book Review, and The Brooklyn Rail, where he currently curates a monthly interview series.

He received his MFA from Bowling Green State University, and previously served as the senior editor at Dzanc Books and as the founding editor of the online literary journal The Collagist. At NMU, he teaches both graduate and undergraduate fiction workshops, including a graduate novel-writing workshop and a new course on book reviewing.
