Student Spotlight:  Mike Erhart
Student Spotlight - Mike

Mike Erhart is a junior from Iron River, Michigan.  He is an Art & Design major with a concentration in Graphic Communications.  Mike has an on campus job and earned a 3.83 GPA last semester.  Mike is legally blind and has a long list of accomplishments that many may think would not be possible for someone who is legally blind.

After five years of self-advocating, Mike recently was granted a driver’s license and is currently saving for a car.  He is also SCUBA certified and a successful deer hunter.  He took a photography class last year and the professor remarked that it was the first legally blind student she had ever had in a photography class!

Mike has done graphic design work for Northstar Hospital in Iron River, the City of Iron River and recently designed a new logo for the Bureau of Services for Blind Persons (formerly known as Michigan Commission for the Blind).  He is currently working on getting a summer internship with Elegant Seagulls Design of Marquette.

Mike attributes his long list of achievements to his ability to advocate for himself.  He has even volunteered his time this semester to talk with students registered with disability services about the importance of self-advocacy.
