2007 Summer Writing Camps

June 25-29

Rhyme and Design (gr. 4-6)
9 a.m. – Noon
Brian McMillan
Students will learn about rhyme, similes, alliteration, and other basic poetry devices and discuss how they are used by poets, such as Shel Silverstein and John Lithgow.  Students will also write and illustrate their own poems on large paper, like a page from Shel Silverstein’s books.

July 9-13

Creating Graphic Novels/Comic Books (gr. 4-7)
9 a.m. – Noon
Casey Thayer
Students will learn about the graphic novel/comic book genre and learn to produce their own graphic novels/comic books.  Approaches to storytelling, drawing, and bookbinding will be discussed. 

July 16-20

Beginning Songwriting for Rock-Star Wannabes (gr. 9-12)
9 a.m. – Noon
Teague Whalen
Students will work on creating and revising their own songs.  In addition to focusing on the traditional style of the verse, bridge, and chorus structure of songs, discussion and activities will center on the use of metaphor and how it works on the literal, concrete level as well as the symbolic, abstract level of meaning. 

Let’s Make a Board Game (gr. 5-8)
Anthony Guerriero
Students will be introduced to the art of developing and producing a board game as well as writing an instruction manual for the board game.  Students will practice professional and technical writing skills.

July 23-27

Write a Play and Perform It   (gr. 4-7)
1 - 4 p.m.
Heidi Stevenson
Students will work together to write a script and perform their own play.  Students will learn about storytelling, character development, and performance.
