Appraisal Education Program

Northern Michigan University helps to coordinate the statewide learning opportunities for the Michigan Association of Real Estate Appraisers (MAREA).

MAREA was founded in 1993 with the gathering of 35 appraisers interested in forming a statewide association that would not only provide timely and useful continuing education at several sites around the state, but also serve as a network. Since then, MAREA has grown to an association of over 400 members coming from every part of Michigan.

MAREA is a non-profit corporation, whose purpose is to promote educational opportunities for Real Estate Appraisers of Michigan. Membership in MAREA is open to all Michigan real estate appraisers. Associate members may include other interested persons and organizations such as lenders and government agencies. Members are invited to provide input to the types of classes available. They are provided with timely informational updates and a place to call with appraisal related questions.

The fiscal agency for MAREA is Northern Michigan University located in Marquette, Michigan. Logistical support is provided by NMU’s Continuing Education and Sponsored Programs. The relationship between MAREA and Northern Michigan University is unique. NMU provides educational courses and administrates MAREA. MAREA selects the type of courses needed and the best times and locations for these courses. All of our Appraisal Program instructors are MAREA members and all have an open-line policy involving questions or concerns from fellow members.

NMU offers a full range of residential and non-residential appraisal courses. In addition to licensure classes, NMU offers continuing education courses around the state. Northern’s goal, with the help of Michigan Association of Real Estate Appraisers (MAREA), is to continue to provide appraisers with quality educational opportunities which are convenient and affordable.

Dues are $125 for one-year membership and $200 for two-year membership. Members are entitled to substantial discounts on tuition.

To become a member or to renew your membership, an application is available and can be mailed or faxed upon request. Please call us at 906-227-2103 to request an application.

Benefits

This year, Michigan License Law Update is at no cost to MAREA members (including current and new MAREA members). Also, to encourage early registration, we will discount the course fee 10 percent for MAREA-members and 5 percent for non-MAREA members.
