Self-Help: Crisis Survival

Following a crisis, you may experience a psychological reaction. Normal reactions to a crisis may include

Physical Reactions

  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Sleeping 12-20 hours per day
  • Under activity
  • Nightmares
  • Hyperactivity
  • Exhaustion
  • Health problems (e.g., digestive problems, headaches)
  • Startle Reactions

Cognitive Reactions

  • Difficulty with concentration
  • Difficulty solving problems
  • Amnesia for the event
  • Inability to attach importance to anything other than incident
  • Memory disturbance
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Isolating yourself

Emotional Reactions

  • Fear
  • Guilt
  • Emotional numbing
  • Over sensitivity
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Feelings of Helplessness
  • Violent (revenge fantasies)
