Northern Michigan University is one of 14 state sponsored regional training agencies providing motorcycle safety training funded through a grant from the Michigan Department of State. Classes are offered at seven sites in locations throughout the west/central Upper Peninsula. Course fee: $25 non-refundable.
The BRC (Basic Rider Course) With the popularity of motorcycle riding on the increase statewide and across the country this Motorcycle Safety Foundation based program offers riders of all skill levels some of the most comprehensive training available anywhere. All of our instructors are MSF certified rider coaches in addition to being experienced avid riders.
NEW MICHIGAN HELMET LAW does not apply to the Michigan Motorcycle Safety Program. All students and RiderCoaches are required to wear protective clothing, including a helmet, while participating in the program. Key points.

The BRC (Basic Rider Course)

Who should take the BRC?
• New riders with little or no experience seeking a license endorsement. [Successful
riders receive a completion waiver, good for one year, for the riding skills portion of the
state motorcycle endorsement test.The written portion of the test is required.]
• Riders who have twice failed the SOS third party skills test.
• Experienced riders who have never had formal training and want to update their skills.
