NMU Communication and Marketing Staff

The following provides a brief overview of the professional credentials of the Northern Michigan University communications and marketing staff members who will be working with the Elite Six Communication Team.

Kristi Evans, news director

Kristi is primarily responsible for the following: supervising the production and distribution of all university-related press releases; responding to media requests for information and interviews; pitching story ideas to reporters; editing the electronic faculty-staff newsletter and writing feature content for the alumni magazine. She previously worked at Kansas State University as TV/radio coordinator, producing audio news feeds and video news releases promoting KSU activities and campus experts. She also earned her master’s degree from KSU while working full time. Evans started her career in broadcast journalism, which was her undergraduate major. She worked at radio and television stations in Eau Claire and Wausau, Wis., in various capacities, from news director and reporter to anchor and anchor/producer.

Eric Johnson, web developer

Eric joined the NMU staff in June 2004 as a web developer. During his tenure at NMU, his job has adapted to the quickly changing pace of information technology and he now works as the university’s web content manager. Eric has served as an instructor for the first-year experience program since 2005.  Prior to joining the staff full-time, Eric worked as a graduate assistant for the Communications and Marketing office focusing on special project for the Web. He received his master’s degree in literature and writing from NMU in 2004.  From 2001 to 2002 Eric worked for Farmers Insurance as a claims adjuster for homeowner’s division. From 1997-2001 he attended Michigan State University majoring in English with a specialization in digital film making.

Andrew Quinn, web systems manager

Drew has more than 16 years of experience delivering leading-edge software products for top U.S. companies. His professional experience includes Andersen Consulting, Metamor Technologies and billion-dollar startup Epotec. He performed the roll of software architect and project manager for the delivery of Allstate's Online Insurance Market Place, Dearborn Financial Service's certification tracking system and Brinson Partner's World-wide Presentation Management System. In addition, Drew was part of the teams delivering Web sites for Hallmark, True Value, Jennair, Walt Disney World and more. His roles have included personnel and client management, hands on technical as well as proposal and presentation. He came to NMU in 2005. 

Rebecca Tavernini, university editor

Becky joined the NMU staff in February 2006 as university editor. She is the editor of Northern Horizons, the university’s alumni magazine; creates NMU publications for both internal and external audiences; and reviews all materials to be distributed off campus. Prior to Northern, Becky was creative director and writer for the advertising agency M. Tavernini and Associates. Previously, she was managing editor of Marquette Monthly, writer/designer at Northern Exposure Marketing and a freelance writer and editor. She is the owner of Upper Peninsula Publishing, which has published a book, calendars and greeting cards. Before moving back to her hometown of Marquette in 1994, Becky was senior editor at Grote Publishing in Madison, Wis., which published three magazines. In New Hampshire, she was advertising assistant at Audio Amateur Publications, which published audio-related magazines, and assistant to the editorial director in the book division of Yankee Publishing, where she also wrote the syndicated Old Farmer’s Almanac newspaper column. Becky has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Michigan and will is working on a master’s in English/writing at NMU.
