Talk on Psychiatric Diagnosis Labels at NMU

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Mary Pelton-Cooper will offer a clinician’s perspective of recent changes to the Diagnostic Manual of the American Psychiatric Association during a talk at Northern Michigan University. The event will be held at 3:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in 167 Gries Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Two diagnostic labels, Asperger’s and Dysthymia, have been reduced to being considered one dimension on a spectrum of severity in the latest version of the diagnostic manual. Pelton-Cooper will explore how changes may affect perceptions of common mental health. She will also discuss a few of the other revisions in the manual from her viewpoint as a licensed clinical psychologist.
