MARQUETTE, Mich .—The DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University will open a retrospective exhibit of a faculty member titled “John Hubbard: Looking Back” on Monday, April 1. A reception is scheduled from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, April 4. The public is invited free of charge.

The exhibit features paintings, drawings and works on paper made by Hubbard over the course of his career. There will be a concurrent exhibition at the DeVos Art Museum featuring artwork made by former students of Hubbard from various points in his career.

"John Hubbard has contributed so much to both the upper Midwest art scene and Northern Michigan University,” said Melissa Matuscak, director and curator of the DeVos Art Museum. “His paintings and prints are an iconic part of the visual culture in the Upper Peninsula. He's also one of the most-respected professors in the School of Art and Design, having influenced and mentored hundreds of students over the 40-plus years he's taught here. This exhibition is a tribute to both John's unique visual eye and tremendous talent and his career as a professor."

Hubbard has played an integral role in the growth of the School of Art and Design since joining the NMU faculty in 1969. He is recognized for his oil paintings of Midwest landscapes and is also an accomplished printmaker and papermaker, specializing in lithography and intaglio.

Hubbard has received many awards including a Michigan Creative Artist Grant, an artist residency at Isle Royale and has worked in over 200 juried exhibitions with 21 one-man shows throughout the Midwest and Canada.

The DeVos Art Museum is located at the corner of Tracy and Seventh Street on NMU’s campus. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and 1-4 p.m. on weekends. For more information, visit nmu.edu/DeVos.
