Arizona Artist of the Year Speaks at NMU
MARQUETTE, Mich.—Martin Moreno, Arizona’s 2011 Artist of the Year, will discuss art on the border during a presentation at Northern Michigan University. His talk is scheduled at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in Jamrich Hall 104. It is free and open to the public.
Moreno was born in Adrian, Mich., and now resides in Phoenix. His paintings, sculptures, murals and mosaics incorporate the color and rhythm of working in the fields and listening to the stories of community elders, as well as the grittier realities of contemporary life on the border. Moreno’s artistic mission has been to enlighten the public by depicting not only the beauty of humankind, but also those areas that are often hidden away. He is involved in community outreach and regularly gives presentations in schools.
The presentation is sponsored by the NMU College of Arts and Sciences, English department, ethnic and cultural diversity committee and the multicultural education and resource center.
