University Marketing and Communications oversees Northern Michigan University's internal and external communication, marketing and branding efforts. The department's areas of primary responsibility include on-campus communications, media relations, community relations, branding, university-related publications, social media and the NMU website.
Information provided to the office may be used in a number of ways: press releases; social media posts; put on the NMU calendar; a note in the NMU Parent Partnership, NMU Community Connection, What's New @ NMU (alumni) or CAMPUSCONNECT (faculty-staff); and/or as a feature story for student hometown newspapers or in Northern Magazine (alumni).
Per university policy, University Marketing and Communications is the only department authorized to write and distribute press releases on behalf of the university. In addition to press releases, the staff also assists the campus community in developing communication and publicity strategies to promote events, news items, university-related accomplishments and student success. Staff members also serve faculty, students and staff as project managers for publications, websites and event publicity campaigns.
University Marketing and Communications is a part of the Enrollment Management and Student Services Division. Until May 2014, it was known as the Communications and Marketing Office and was then a part of the President's Division. From May 2014 through June 2015 the department was known as Identity, Brand and Marketing.
