Jeulani Gahiji - May 2017

Jeulani Gahiji is a first generation student from Chicago, Illinois. She is earning a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Entrepreneurship.

During her time at Northern she has been heavily involved in student life.  She is a member of the Black Student Union and was acting president from 2014- 2016. Jeulani has also been a member of ASNMU and is currently serving as Chair of Assembly. Jeulani participated in the Superior Edge Program, logging in over 1,000 hours. She chose to act on her passion for contributing to the experience and success of her fellow students by becoming a Resident Adviser. She was a nominee for the Outstanding Graduating Female senior award and was the keynote speaker at the 2016-2017 Leadership Recognition Banquet. Last summer, Jeulani studied abroad in Shanghai, China for six weeks, studying International Business, which ignited her passion for studying abroad and led to her working with the International Programs Office to promote the importance of studying abroad.

Jeulani chose to attend Northern because she visited and fell in love with the campus and the people. Being able to see the campus and feel what it was like to be here solidified that this was the place she needed to be.  Marquette provided a different scene than her hometown and opened her eyes to the opportunities available here.

Jeulani spends her spare time hanging out with Black Student Union and ASNMU members, encouraging students to study abroad as a Global Ambassador for International Studies Abroad and dancing when she finds the time. She devotes much of her time working to create and implement new programs that would benefit the students at Northern and the surrounding community. Her passions are helping others embrace diversity and encouraging people to educate themselves on the histories and backgrounds of those they come into contact with. Her work in the Black Student Union resulted in a regularly held open forum called "Let's Talk About It" that has had attendees ranging from students to members of the Board of Trustees.

Jeulani's favorite NMU memories include participating in the annual Leadership Recognition Banquets that highlight the accomplishments of student organizations all over campus. She enjoys learning about what other student leaders have done and being able to connect with them all in one room.

Jeulani future plans are to work at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and earn her Master's in Higher Education Leadership.
