Winter 2024 Commencement

The ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 4th at 10:30 a.m. at the Superior Dome.  Speech-to-text service is accessible for attendees via smartphone or tablet at www.nmu.edu/ceremony

At this time, masks will not be required at Commencement, but that is subject to change if COVID cases rise measurably in Marquette County. There are currently no limitations on attendees.

Commencement rehearsal will be held on Friday, May 3rd at 2:15 p.m. in the Superior Dome.  Saturday students will assemble in the Practice Gyms at 9:30 a.m. before they march to the Dome.

Student regalia can be purchased from the NMU Bookstore:  nmu.edu/commencement/caps-gowns-tassels. Bookstore's Grad Fair will be on Thursday, March 21st from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A reception will be held immediately following Commencement in the Grand Ballrooms of the Northern Center.  All family and friends are invited.

Rebekah Allen

Her high school graduation ceremony was canceled by the pandemic, but Rebekah Allen will make her Northern Michigan University commencement especially memorable by serving as the student speaker. The first-generation college student from Davison, Mich., will also earn a bachelor's degree in English-creative writing at the Dec. 16 ceremony in NMU's Superior Dome.

Stacy Boyer-Davis

Stacy Boyer-Davis, associate professor of accounting, will be the faculty keynote speaker for Northern Michigan University's Dec. 16 commencement. She also serves as assistant department head of accounting and the MBA program in the College of Business.

Boyer-Davis was selected as speaker through a nomination process overseen by ASNMU, the student government organization.

Honorary Degrees

Doctor of Business

Mr. Scott L. Holman, '65

Holman, who splits his time between Freeland and Michigamme, will receive an honorary Doctor of Business degree. He graduated from NMU with two degrees in business management/marketing and biology, then founded the Bay Cast Companies in Bay City. He now serves as president and owner of Mt. Shasta Lodge Restaurant, as well as owner and manager of King Lake Wilderness Properties.

Holman ‘s dedication to NMU is evident through his contributions as a two-time member of the NMU Board of Trustees, which he chaired for a period. His philanthropy has made a lasting impact on his alma mater as well by facilitating scholarships, research initiatives and campus infrastructure enhancement.

Holman served as president of the NMU Alumni Association and as a member of the College of Business Board. He also collaborated with university departments to expand research opportunities for students at the Granite Island Lighthouse. The past Distinguished Alumni Award recipient even played a pivotal role in NMU's groundbreaking WiMAX network, which is now the Educational Access Network.

Doctor of Economics

Dr. Thomas K. Holmstrom

Holmstrom, a Marquette resident, will receive an honorary Doctor of Economics degree. He began his academic journey at NMU his junior year, graduating with bacehlor's in economics in 1959. He also earned graduate degrees from Oklahoma State University. His career stops included the Michigan Employment Security Commission and later the Labor Department in Washington, D.C., before a teaching opportunity at NMU surfaced with a call from the head of the Economics Department in 1962.

Holmstrom exhibited a profound dedication to NMU and the countless students he educated and inspired for more than three decades. Holmstrom's commitment extended to the broader community and causes close to his heart, such as UPAWS and its annual Strut Your Mutt fundraiser. NMU trustees voted to grant him the status of Professor Emeritus of Economics in 1997.
