Achievements
NMU’s Student Leader Fellowship Program (SLFP) was awarded one of the Marquette County Community Foundation Catalyst Awards, which recognizes those who support the community through volunteerism and charity. The SLFP was selected primarily because of the 100-hour community service internships that each NMU student fellow designs and completes as part of the program. About 50 students are selected for the SLFP each year. Since the program was created 23 years ago, students have completed more than 95,000 hours of community service at more than 400 sites. The SLFP has worked regularly with Moosewood Nature Center, the U.P. Children’s Museum, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Lake Superior Village Youth Center, schools, nursing homes, environmental conservation groups, hospitals and other non-profit organizations around Marquette. Mike Roy, a former NMU administrator and MCCF trustee, nominated the SLFP for the award. Sandra Imdieke (Education) was among those interviewed on the “red carpet” at a banquet in Chicago honoring the 2013 Newbery and Caldecott medalists. Imdieke served as chair of the selection committee for the Caldecott Award, which is presented to the “artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.” The winner was Jon Klassen, writer and illustrator of This is Not My Hat from Candlewick Press. The publisher asked for Imdieke’s permission to post the video on its website as part of its year-long celebration of "We Believe in Picture Books." Click here and scroll down to see the interview.
Jason Bishop (HPER) received a $5,000 grant from the American Alliance for Heath, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). The funding will support a project addressing issues related to lack of aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities among children and adolescents by creating and providing initial validation of the Scale of Perceived Motor Competence (SPMC). This instrument will assess children’s perceived competence toward completing motor skills. The grant runs through August.
Melissa Matuscak (Art and Design) received a $4,000 grant from the Finlandia Foundation to facilitate the cleaning and restoration of approximately 20 paintings by Finnish artist N. Cecelia Kettunen (1896-1992). These are part of a larger collection of more than 300 paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, photographs, letters, ephemera and manuscripts gifted to the DeVos Art Museum by the artist before her death. The grant period ends April 30.
